  1. POW  - Powerline Offline reader for Windows  v1.10

  4. Minimum System Requirements
  5. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  6. IBM AT 286 Compatible or better.  (VBRUN300.DLL Dated 12-May-93 for 286)
  7. 3Mb Memory minimum, preferably 4Mb or more.
  8. Windows v3.1.
  9. Approx 400k HD space for program etc. not including VBRUN300.DLL or data.
  10.  
  11. Terminal Font must be installed in Windows.

  13. BBS Settings
  14. ~~~~~~~~~~~~
  15. The BBS must be set up to provide QWK files as follows:-
  16.  
  17. Packet type        - QWK
  18. Archiver       - ZIP
  19. Index Files (.NDX) - ON
  20. CONTROL.DAT       - ON    Usually the default.

  22. POW will display the following, if turned on in the BBS mail door:-

  34. This is an update of POW, adding new features plus some minor bug fixes.  
  35. Automatic installation of POW files and Program Manager Group/Icons is now
  36. provided.  For more info see HISTORY.TXT.

  39. The internal editor will recognise SpelMate spelling checker if appropriate 
  40. files are found in your WINDOWS directory (SPELMATE.DLL and dictionaries).
  41. Text in the edit box is spell checked except for quoted text which is left 
  42. alone (etiquette suggests that text quoted from another msg should not be
  43. altered other than formatting).  SpelMate requires about 1Mb extra memory.
  44.  
  45. SPELMATE.DLL is supplied in POW110.ZIP, and the dictionaries are provided 
  46. in either POWDUK.ZIP (British spelling) or POWDUS.ZIP (American spelling).

  48. If you are upgrading POW and have been using the Shareware program SpelMate 
  49. by James Herron (Aciran Software), you will not need to download the POW 
  50. dictionaries as POW will use your existing dictionaries.

  53. The Shareware Principle.
  54. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  55. POW is released under the Shareware principle.  You may use the program 
  56. for up to 60 days for evaluation.  Please register POW if you find it 
  57. useful.  Registration will remove the opening and closing Shareware 
  58. registration reminders, and provide funds to allow continued development 
  59. of POW.  Registered users will receive high priority for suggestions for 
  60. improvements.

  62. When passing POW on to others or uploading please include all files in
  63. the ZIP without modification.  
  64.  
  65. Registered users:- Do NOT distribute the POW.INI file containing your
  66.                    registration details.  
  67.

  69. Registration forms are provided in DOS and Windows format text.
  70. The Windows form may be accessed from within POW and completed/printed.
  71. Also, available from ProgMan Group if Automatic Installation used.

  73. Registration addresses for UK and USA are provided.  A registration code 
  74. is sent to you which removes the registration reminder screens.  Also,
  75. the words "On trial" in the tagline of messages you write are replaced
  76. by your registered serial number.

  108. Taglines playing on the initials of POW were kindly supplied by Bob Aldridge
  109. a Beta tester and one of the first to register POW.  Thanks Bob.

  111. Other files/programs required:-

  113. If you are not already using SpelMate and wish to check the spelling in your 
  114. messages/replies, you will need to obtain either POWDUK.ZIP or POWDUS.ZIP 
  115. which contain the dictionaries (see Late News above).  After unzipping, 
  116. copy or move the dictionaries to the Windows directory (not System dir).
  117.  
  118. POW uses COMMDLG.DLL (Windows DLL for Common Dialogs) which is provided 
  119. with Windows 3.1 and should be in your Windows\System directory.
  120. (Windows dir for shared Windows systems on networks).
  121.  
  122. You will also need a copy of VBRUN300.DLL, the Visual Basic v3.0 runtime 
  123. library plus PKZIP.EXE & PKUNZIP.EXE v2.  These may be obtained from most 
  124. Bulletin Boards.  If using the supplied PIF files, edit these to include 
  125. the appropriate paths for PKZIP/PKUNZIP otherwise make sure that the PK 
  126. progs are in a directory on your DOS Path (as specified in AUTOEXEC.BAT).  
  127. The VBRUN300.DLL file should be put in the Windows\System directory
  128. (or Windows directory on shared Windows setups on networks).  
  129. The version dated 12-May-93 (or later) is required for a 286 computer 
  130. (bug in earlier version).

  132. To use the built-in spelling checker in the editor you will need either 
  133. POWDUK.ZIP (UK Spelling) or POWDUS.ZIP (US Spelling) main dictionary.
  134. After unzipping, the MAINUK.DIC or MAINUS.DIC and Private.DIC files should 
  135. be put in your Windows directory.
  136.  
  137. AUTOMATIC INSTALLATION.
  138. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  139. If you already have VBRUN300.DLL and PKZIP.EXE & PKUNZIP.EXE on your system
  140. you may use SETUP.EXE provided in the POW zip to install the other files.
  141. (Do NOT use the SETUP.EXE in the Windows dir)
  142.  
  143. Run SETUP.EXE from the directory in which you unzipped POW.  You will be 
  144. asked to specify a directory into which to install POW.  If upgrading
  145. from an earlier version, you may specify the directory in which the 
  146. earlier version was installed and the setup program will update the files 
  147. for you.  Your Folders data files and POW.INI will not be overwritten and
  148. will be used by the new version, retaining your preferred configuration.

  150. The automatic installation will check for the Windows version and cater
  151. for networks and Windows for Workgroups.  POW SETUP will check the version 
  152. of the DLL and VBX files used by POW and copy/update these where required.
  153.  
  154. If installing POW for the first time, a collection of Taglines is provided 
  155. in Taglines.POW.  This is installed in the POW directory but if you wish to
  156. use these Taglines, it should be moved to the Data directory after running 
  157. POW for the first time.

  161. For those who prefer to install manually, the files may be copied/moved to
  162. the appropriate directories - see below and Installation section in POW.WRI.

  164. MANUAL INSTALLATION.
  165. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  166. GRID.VBX and CMDIALOG.VBX should be put in the Windows\System directory, 
  167. making sure you do not replace a newer version.  SPELMATE.DLL and the 
  168. dictionaries should be put in the Windows directory.  Other POW files 
  169. should be in the directory containing POW.EXE with the exception of 
  170. Taglines.POW which should be moved to the Data directory after running POW 
  171. for the first time.

  176. Getting Started.
  177. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  178. This version now includes PIF files to run PKZIP/PKUNZIP in a window.  These
  179. may be edited to provide paths to directory/ies containing PKZIP/PKUNZIP if
  180. these are not on the DOS Path.
  181.  
  182. In addition to the icon in POW.EXE, an alternative icon for use in Program 
  183. Manager is provided (POW.ICO).  
  184.

  186. Notes & Known Bugs:-
  187. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  188. If a Font other than Terminal (the default) is selected for message display
  189. or in the editor, the formatting may be incorrect and ASCII chars above 128 
  190. may not display correctly.  For correct display a fixed font with the 
  191. ASCII(OEM) char set is required.  Fixed pitch (monospaced) fonts such as
  192. FixedSys or Courier New (TrueType) using the ANSI char set may be 
  193. satisfactory if high ASCII chars are not used.  
  194.  
  195. A fixed font is also recommended for printing messages to give the right 
  196. formatting (eg. Terminal or a Printer Font).
  197.  
  198. We are currently in the process of adding support for more mail doors in 
  199. the Add/Drop Conference feature.  QMail support has been added for this 
  200. release.  Hopefully all mail doors that use the "old style" control 
  201. messages will now be fully supported and display the appropriate buttons.  
  202. POW has been tested on Tomcat, Cam-mail, MarkMail, JCQWK and QMail doors.  
  203. Mail doors that will only use the "new style" control messages (other than 
  204. QMail which IS now supported) are not yet fully supported and only the list 
  205. of conferences in the CONTROL.DAT will be displayed.  However, if you have 
  206. the info, you can create a message in the Editor, addressed to the name of 
  207. the mail door, with a subject of CONFIG (or whatever), and put the control 
  208. lines in the message body.  Messages with a "To" that matches the mail door 
  209. name will not have a tearline and tagline added.
  210.  
  211. Internet EMail support has been improved to include Automatic "To:" line in 
  212. reply and extracting originators first and last names for Quoting, 
  213. defaulting to "->" if unsuccessful.  A destination name/address stored in 
  214. the "To" pick list (Address Book) will also produce a "To:" line in the 
  215. message/reply if it's too long for the normal "To" field in the REP.
  216.  
  217. Advanced Options have been provided by directly editing POW.INI outside POW.
  218. Includes Quoting style and QWK pkt management options - see POW.WRI or on-
  219. line help.
  220.  
  221. Signatures in the Editor now use shifted Function keys.  
  222. F3 provides Find Next.
